:::How to Tip of the Day::: Gas Savings 101

What is HyperMiling?
With gas prices on the rise there is one thing that the world is in need of doing and that is finding a way to save on gas mileage. The latest trend in gas savings has been something called Hypermiling.
So what is "Hypermiling" you may ask? It is a way to save on gas consumption by performing various techniques to your car and the way you drive. Hypermilers use a variety of techniques to maximize fuel efficiency: airing the tires up to or beyond the recommended pressure, forgoing air conditioning, coasting whenever possible (sometimes with the engine off), timing their arrivals at intersections to hit green lights and traveling around 50 mph on the highway.
In some Hybrids people have been able to save up to 85-90 MPG on a daily basis. Until something is done about Oil prices, I think this will be more and more of a trend. If you see someone on the Highway going 50 mph in a 70 mph zone he maybe a hypermiler not just some slow poke!
Is some of the hypermiling techniques dangerous? Some can be such as the Nascar strategy of "Drafting" This is the process of riding or tailgating on someone's bumper which could lead to roadrage or even death if on the highway and someone was to break suddenly it would not give you a proper distance to stop. There are many other ways to save on gas other than drafting the person in front of you and hypermiling has many other save alternatives! So get out there and save but do it reasonably and safe!
